“I am often asked what can people do to become a good global citizen? I reply that it begins in your own community.”

 - Kofi Annan, Former Secretary General of the United Nations

WHAT IS GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP?
Global citizenship refers to the concept of recognizing and embracing the idea that we are all part of a global community and have responsibilities that extend beyond our local and national borders. Global citizenship promotes a sense of belonging to the world as a whole, recognizes the interconnectedness of our actions and their impact on others around the globe, and emphasizes the belief that all of us, regardless of our nationality, ethnicity, or cultural background, share a common humanity, face common global challenges and have a collective responsibility to build inclusive and peaceful societies.

WHAT IS THE GCP?
The FDR Global Citizenship Program (GCP) describes the collective efforts of a wide variety of FDR stakeholders to support the development and delivery of a broad range of programs and initiatives that allow FDR students to develop the skills, knowledge and dispositions associated with being active and responsible global citizens. The GCP is aligned with the FDR Mission and Core Values, and recognizes that the development of strong global citizens begins in our own community with education and local action.

GCP MISSION
The overall aim of the FDR Global Citizenship Program is to empower students to play active roles to face and resolve global challenges and to contribute proactively to a just, inclusive and sustainable world. Furthermore, the GCP seeks to guide, support and recognize students’ efforts as they pursue their passion for learning, lead lives of integrity, create socially responsible solutions and evolve as global citizens. More specifically the GCP seeks to:

  • Identify and promote curricular and extracurricular opportunities where students can develop the skills, knowledge and dispositions associated with being active and responsible global citizens.
  • Support the efforts of the FDR Integrity Team in their Strategy 3 work to strengthen our identity as a community united by our mission and core values.
  • Embrace opportunities to promote global citizenship on campus and beyond by reaching out and contributing to community service activities at the local, national and international level.
  • Recognize and celebrate the efforts and successes of our students as they strive to build a just, inclusive and sustainable world.

GCP OUTREACH
The GCP is always looking for ways to carry out service outside the walls of FDR. If you are aware of any projects or initiatives where our FDR students, honor societies or clubs might be able to provide service to our greater community, please contact one of the GCP coordinators listed on this page.
