RATIONALE
Rationale for the Program
Welcome to our “Bring Your Own Laptop” program, better known as “BYOL”, where students in Grades 6 to 12 bring their laptops on a daily basis to school for learning.
As part of our goal to prepare our students to be future-ready global citizens, we believe it is essential to understand the 21st Century learning skills at early stages in the learning journey. Technology allows all learners to visit places they have never seen, communicate and collaborate with other learners around the world, express themselves in different creative ways, understand the basics of computational thinking (coding) for problem-solving skills, and become responsible digital citizens.
In addition, our BYOL program:
- Improves student engagement and fosters student-centered classrooms
- Allows teachers to more easily differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students
- Gives students a tool to help them become self-directed learners
- Makes technology integration more efficient with more time spent on instruction
- Teaches digital citizenship and technology usage to students
Laptop Registration to the FDR Network
Before bringing a new laptop to the school please fill this form. The IT Help Desk needs to register all new laptops into the FDR-STUDENTS network so all students can connect to our wifi at school. We will not require any other data (brand, model, operating system).
Colegio Roosevelt adheres to data privacy and child protection laws and regulations, as determined by Peruvian law and International agreements.
Student Commitment and Responsibilities
Having access to the FDR network is a privilege, therefore when using internet at school, students commit to respecting the Digital Citizenship Agreement and to making proper use of it for educational purposes only.
Technical Support
The IT Help Desk cannot provide technical support to devices not owned by Colegio Roosevelt, such as BYOL student laptops and parent devices. If your laptop malfunctions or gets damaged, the Help Desk will recommend that you contact a technician of your choice in Lima.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP AGREEMENT
Middle School and High School Student Digital Citizenship Agreement
Technology at Colegio Roosevelt, the American School of Lima, is an integral part of the school's Mission and Core Values. The Digital Citizenship Agreement applies to all technology devices students use on school grounds either school owned or personal devices. This includes, but is not limited to: laptops, desktops, tablets, cellular phones, etc.
The use of digital devices and access to the school's infrastructure is considered a privilege and requires responsible use. The following are guidelines to help students be responsible users of technology in their lives. Breach of the Responsible Use Policy will result in disciplinary action by the school, as outlined in the Behavior Guidelines in the Middle and High School Student Handbooks, and potential legal action.
SOFTWARE INSTALLS
Please make sure all laptops have the following software installed before the first day of school.
Internet Browsers
Internet Browsers (Minimum of two different browsers should be installed):
- Google Chrome http://www.google.com/chrome
- Mozilla Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/
- Microsoft Edge https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/download?form=MA13FJ
- Safari http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
- Educational Use : Not all websites work for all Internet browsers. Two different browsers allow for a better chance that an online simulation or video for research/practice will be accessible.
Software required for your laptop
- PDF Reader/Editor (suggestion: free Adobe Reader www.adobe.com)
- Movie editing software:
- Quicktime Player http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
- VLC Player https://www.videolan.org/vlc/
- Image editing software (students can also access free online image editors)
- XNView https://www.xnview.com/en/
- GIMP http://www.gimp.org/ - A free, open-source alternative to Photoshop
Security and Virus Protection
All laptops need to have security updates and a firewall turned on. In addition, PC laptops need an updated anti-virus. Below is a list of free, recommended anti-virus software to consider:
- Malwarebytes https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac-download
- Microsoft Defender Antivirus - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/microsoft-defender-for-individuals
- AVG – http://free.avg.com/ww-en/homepage
- Avast! - http://www.avast.com/index
- It is important for students to keep their computers free from malware and viruses to ensure they run efficiently for school-work. Students know that they should avoid the use of P2P (torrents) sites that often contain malware and break copyright laws.
Protecting your device
Dress it up before you take it out! This is important to purchase protective gear for your laptop. It will help protect it from the daily use. It will also make it easier to identify since so many students have the same laptop model.
Everyday, your laptop must come to school with a:
- Legible, large label with your name
- Hard shell case - These snap onto the laptop frame to protect the laptop and provide minimal shock absorption if dropped.
- Sleeve - When not using your laptop, we recommend you slip it into the sleeve, especially when placing the laptop inside the backpack to protect it from bumps. Sleeves come in a variety of materials, some more protective than others: neoprene, foam, canvas, leather, and fabric.
