Middle School
Overview
Welcome to Middle School
The Middle School years are a time of tremendous academic, emotional, and physical growth. Our students experience tremendous growth throughout these years –both socio-emotionally, and academically. It is essential that we provide a challenging and compassionate learning environment to support this period of profound growth.
What We Do
-
Facilitate partnerships with students, parents, and teachers to create a positive learning environment that promotes learning and discovery.
-
Design programs to provide students with service learning and community service opportunities. Engage students in identifying and solving problems in their community and the larger context.
-
Hire teachers who are keenly aware of the needs of young adolescents and have the training, enthusiasm, and expertise to work with Middle School students!
Learning
Learning in the Middle School ensures every child feels known, valued, seen, and heard.
When appropriately challenged, Middle Schoolers rise to meet the expectations of their teachers, coaches, and mentors. To ensure an engaging program, we offer students a rich selection of courses that will provide opportunities to explore their interests and challenge them to reach new academic heights.
- Required Courses: English/Language Arts, Humanities, Math, Science, Physical Education, Music/Art/Drama, Design, Future Ready and Spanish A (fluent speakers) or Spanish B (acquiring fluency)
- Enrichment Options: Students may also explore the Arts more deeply through courses in Strings, Band, Music, Art and Drama.
Advisory:
What is Middle School advisory?
Advisory’s main purpose is to meet the unique social and emotional needs of adolescent students in middle school.
The program is designed to support and guide students in the areas of:
- Gaining confidence
- Developing independence
- Managing and understanding emotions
- Inclusion and FDR’s core values
- Developing a growth mindset
What are the goals of advisory?
- Creating a sense of community
- Building positive relationships
- Deepening an understanding of the habits that support learning
- Developing a stronger sense of self to allow each student to be their “best self” (from RULER™)
What is the model of delivery for advisory?
Each day begins with a 25 minute advisory period with a group size that is smaller than academic classes. The lessons are intentional and organized while allowing for group discussions and flexibility. Students engage in discussion and activities to accomplish the goals and objectives of Advisory.

Counseling
The Middle School Counseling Department at Colegio Roosevelt has student wellness as its goal. The Middle School counselors work to implement programs and interventions that embody the mission of the school and can be incorporated into the lives of our students every day.
Our mission is to empower our students... Students are empowered when they have knowledge of self and the ability to positively interact with others. Counselors empower students by helping them to learn about themselves through lessons, individual and group meetings, and by providing targeted interventions and support to meet the needs of each individual student. During their years in Middle School, students engage in activities and lessons that focus on self-awareness, mindfulness, explorating strengths, increasing positive communication skills, and community/friendship building. We believe that with increased emotional intelligence our students are empowered for success in our future.
To pursue their passion for learning... Counselors do this every day by meeting with students to help them with difficulties they may be having, supporting social interactions, helping students advocate for themselves, monitoring student progress and developing individualized plans for students to find success. The Middle School Team works together to help students to overcome obstacles and pursue their passions.
Lead lives of integrity... Above all, integrity involves being true to yourself. It is the state of being whole. Counselors work with students in areas such as decision- making, peer communication and conflict resolution. Throughout Middle School, students are empowered with choice and learn to act with thoughtfulness, maturity, and confidence. Our goal is to help students make decisions and take action which not only benefits themselves, but to develop empathy and consider their larger community and society.
And develop socially responsible solutions… When students make good decisions that are balanced and fair for themselves and others, they are being socially responsible. Students engage in activities that teach empathy, kindness, mindfulness, and a strengths-based approach to problem-solving with a growth mindset. By approaching problems from this framework, students find socially responsible and sustainable solutions.
Colegio Roosevelt has two Middle School Counselors to help support students with academic, personal and social concerns. Both Counselors focus on helping students with challenges through individual meetings and meetings with families.
