BOOK FAIR:  All middle school students will be attending the PTA Book Fair the week of September 24th.  Please make sure that you send some cash with your student as there will surely be books that will be of interest to them!

ATL: During ATL for the next month, students in middle school will be attending two workshops with completely different focuses.

NOSOTRAS is a workshop directed by Gina Graham, a well-known clinical psychologist, who works with children and adolescents as well as families.  Her objective is to help our students build self-esteem and leadership skills. The students form an integral part of interactive sessions where the definition of self-esteem is discussed.  Other focus areas are: What causes a good self-esteem? What steps need to be in place in order to develop a strong self esteem? Finally, students are presented with a unique question - What is the relationship between a strong self-esteem and leadership?  At the end of the sessions students will have completed several worksheets and have a basic idea of their strengths and weaknesses and what skills they need to work on in order to become leaders.

ACEPTA is a private association created to educate students and parents about drug prevention and alcohol use and abuse.  Each grade level has been separated into small groups allowing the students to interact freely with the moderator.  The moderators are young adults who can relate to our students and give the necessary knowledge to allow our students to make correct choices when confronted with decisions about alcohol and drugs. Some of the topics that they will be discussing are “The teenage brain and alcohol”, “Legal and illegal drugs”, and “The peer group and drugs”. These sessions will help the students understand that a healthy, secure, and successful life is a life without alcohol and drugs.

DO YOU KNOW THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MYP LEARNER PROFILE?

An MYP student can be described as an “inquirer”. There are many activities happening throughout the middle school on a regular basis that provide our students varied experiences with inquiry.  The sixth grade math students have picked a “special number” and are investigating the characteristics of the number, finding connections between this number and everyday life, and sharing their discoveries with their peers with poster, videos, stories, and games. In Humanities they designed their ideal island after researching natural and human resources, how humans use these resources, and the effect of environment on humans and vice-versa.  The seventh grade scientists are learning how to design an experiment using basic science skills such as observation, inference, and posing questions.  Also, in Spanish Civics, they are studying the different types of pollution and their effect on the environment and finding viable solutions to these problems.  The eighth grade Humanities classes are working on a picture dictionary of the learner profile characteristics by giving their own definition of the words, illustrating the words, and using it in a sentence. In science they are testing Newton’s Third Law of Motion, (action/reaction), by designing original cars that will be used in a competition next week. All this happened in just one week!
