The Middle School Dance Concert was held this past Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon. Middle School dancers from the elective class and the after school program performed original dance compositions of different styles, including jazz, hip hop, modern, lyrical, Broadway, and much more! They did an excellent job demonstrating their hard work under the direction of Mrs. Ann Gould. Our performing arts have taken on another dimension. Congratulations on a job well done. http://www.amersol.edu.pe/ms/news/index.asp

Colegio Mi Buen Jesús students were the guests of our sixth graders this past Wednesday morning. The children participated in three different activities (playing on our elementary playground, viewing a puppet theater, and dancing (girls) or playing soccer (boys). All of these activities involved our sixth graders interacting with their visitors. Then, with the help of parents Mrs. Hohagen and Mrs. Odiaga, the entire group was served ice cream sundaes. The final touch was when each visiting student received gifts in a bag individually decorated and labeled with the child’s name. This was made possible through monies raised during the Sponsored Run. This has been an annual event in recent years and is a highlight for the children from Colegio Mi Buen Jesus. http://www.amersol.edu.pe/ms/news/index.asp
SHOES: Summer is coming and once it does the local stores will be stocked with thousands of pairs of all black shoes. Please take the opportunity to find ALL BLACK shoes for second semester. Not mostly black, all black. It might have been difficult to find them in August, but February will be different. Students are allowed to wear sandals until Easter break – but they must be ALL BLACK and must be securely fastened to the foot – they need a strap at the back.
CALCULATORS: If you are going to the U.S. in January or February or know someone else who is, you should consider picking up a graphing calculator TI-83 or TI-84 (Texas Instrument). If your child is in grade 8 they definitely need one in grades 9-12. If your child is in grade 7 they will need one at times for homework. In grade 8 we have a classroom set for students to use in class so that it is not necessary for them to bring the calculator to school. If you have questions about the calculator please contact Mr. Gould bgould@amersol.edu.pe or Ms. Freeburn kfreebur@amersol.edu.pe The PTA has a few calculators for rent also.
OVERDUES: In the past, parents have been surprised on the last day of school which their child did not receive a report card but instead had a letter saying there was an outstanding obligation. Usually the comment is “I didn’t know or I would have been sure he/she turned it in.” All materials were due in to the Media Center on December 5th. I have sent emails to parents of students with outstanding books. The Business Office is the one to contact parents about outstanding fees. I will not have the list from teachers of which students have not turned in textbooks until the end since students are still using them. The majority of our report card holds however are for library books, so we are trying to be proactive with those to get your help to ensure report cards go home on the 22nd. The Middle School Office will not reopen after that day until February 5, 2007.
The First Lego League (http://www.firstlegoleague.org/) is an international program for children ages 9-16 that combines a hands-on, interactive robotics program with a sports-like atmosphere. Teams consist of up to 10 players with the focus on such things as team building, problem solving, creativity, and analytical thinking. Each September, a new Challenge is unveiled to FLL International teams across the world. Over the course of 8 weeks, they strategize, design, build, program, test and refine a fully autonomous robot capable of completing the various missions of the FLL International "Robot Game" Using the LEGO MINDSTORMS™ technology. They also search the web, talk to scientists, visit the library and develop compelling presentations based on the FLL International "Research Assignment", which relates to a problem or opportunity facing the world today. FDR has two teams participating from Middle School and 1 from High School. We have been chosen to host the national finals on December 16th. The winners will represent Peru in the international finals to be held in Atlanta on the 12 - 14 of April, 2007. Gaby Eyzaguirre is working with the middle school.
For this event we will need volunteers. Please go into this link for more information http://www.robotecperu.com/voluntarios.html And if you as a parent would like to do it, please send an email to voluntarios@robotecperu.com. It is helpful to be bilingual but volunteers who speak only English are also welcome since there will be chores that don’t require the use of any language. The Peruvian representatives of FLL have bilingual trainers that will give instructions to volunteers.
