IQUITOS TRAVELERS – 8TH GRADE -  The 8th grade teachers will call Mrs. Holladay when they arrive in Iquitos from the airport or dock. An email will be sent to all 8th grade parents announcing the arrival.  On Friday, they will call when they are ready to take off from Iquitos. An email will be sent to all 8th grade parents so that you will have an idea of when they will arrive back at FDR.  If any messages are forwarded through the Iquitos office of Explorama during the week we will pass along the information by email.

IQUITOS TRAVELERS – 7th GRADE – Permission slips and a contact information sheet is being sent home in the Monday Envelope. Please return the permission slip completely filled out with your student on Tuesday. Also, on Monday Ms. Rohter will be demonstrating how she packs her suitcase for a successful trip. The packing list is on the web page.

IN SUPPORT OF OUR FRIENDS: Less than two weeks ago Manolo, ”The candy man”, and Richard Olivera, a school gardener, suffered strokes or something similar at nearly the same time.  We are happy to report that both are out of the hospital and now need to do rehabilitation.  We will be having a multi-faith/multi-cultural service during lunch on Thursday for interested students and staff. Students and others from different religions and cultures will express their feelings about these two men and their hopes and prayers for their full recovery.  All students and staff are invited to attend to share the warmth of a diverse community pulling together in support of each other.

RENAISSANCE FAIR: The 8th grade Renaissance Fair was a huge success. The students studied a “career” from the Renaissance time and then created a product for visitors. There were mapmakers, blacksmiths, bakers, tailors, barber-surgeons, painters, architects, and many others.  They explained their trade and product to parents, 6th & 7th graders, and elementary school students who came to visit the exhibit. Students learned the elements of the MYP design cycle in order to do this assessment. Congratulations to all of the students.

SPONSORED RUN: Sponsored Run, our annual major fund raiser for middle school community service, was a huge success. As of October 13th the results are 8th grade: S/.13,752,  7th grade S/.21,483,  and 6th grade S/.27,829. That makes a grand total of S/.63,064. You can see pictures here:   http://fdr-web/ms/news/index.asp

SEATBELTS ON THE BUSES:  Seatbelts have been installed in our school buses.  It is REQUIRED that all riders use them from the time they get on the bus until the bus comes to a complete stop at their destination.  The drivers and adults on the buses will report those who do not follow this requirement and we will also be reviewing videos.  Please talk to your child about this important safety issue. Also, remind them that it is law that all passengers in a car use a seatbelt – even those in the back seat.
