When we first arrived at the school “Victor Raúl Haya de la Torre” in Manchay, they told us that they needed a library that the kids could use. There, they would learn to understand what they read. When we went to the library we saw dirty walls, dusty floors, and many boxes of poorly kept books from children’s stories to dictionaries. We realized that “Victor Raul Haya de la Torre” could have major help from us. The main problem was the children’s illiteracy. Even though they could understand words, and talk, while reading, they were slow and they mumbled all the time. After a few weeks of helping in Manchay we stopped going for a week because, we had to present our Action Plan. The week after we arrived at the library and saw it library was completed and the books were shelved there were pillows, rugs, shelves and finished walls. We had a major problem, but we worked together as a team and overcame it. We realized that they solved the main problem of a library it still wasn’t a nice library, because even though it was clean, painted and decorated, the boxes from books were still there, meaning that there weren’t a lot of books for the kids to read. |
