To create a sustainable solution a problem must first be found. That was our philosophy as we entered the building of La Molina # 96 Fire Station. We knew the station was in disrepair and needed supplies, but we didn’t know which supplies were needed the most. The station chief at the time, Captain Rene Noriega, explained to us the main problems and concerns of the station. The station lacks medical equipment, operational vehicles and rescue tools. We also found out that the fire station’s truck did not have an operational pump, the ambulance had crashed, the rescue truck had a rusted motor and the other fire truck had a very small water capacity. The small tank of the second truck only allowed it to launch water for a few minutes. We also discovered that their hydraulic rescue tools were in a in a bad state of disrepair. Three of five rescue tools did not work and the remaining two were losing power because of broken pressure tanks and rusted parts. The station also required money to bring a new truck and ambulance from the Unites States. They had already bought the trucks but were short of money for the shipping. The station’s medical equipment was outdated and many medical accessories which were designed to be disposable were being reused because of the lack of materials. Also, the rescue truck did not have many rescue tools. The ones that the station needed the most were: pike poles, halligan tools, wire cutters, fence cutters, axes and multiuse tools. During the project we also discovered that the local community was not informed about fire safety and that kids do not even know the emergency number, 116. We also investigated fires in Peru, as well as the number and kind of emergencies that this specific station attended to last year. What stood out was that medical emergencies were most common, making up 70% of last year’s emergencies. During this long stage of the project we learned many things. This stage of COFO was useful for helping us determine priorities for our action plan.
