The site that we chose was Cuna Jardin Los Pinos, which is located in La Molina. The community problem we attempted to address is the kind of living conditions a child should be in within a day care center. A day care center is a place in which children attend whenever their parents are not available to take care of them. These centers usually have school related hours or sometimes longer. Since a day care center is like being in your house, a child has to have a specific area to eat and play like in any other home; otherwise the child would not be organized. This center, physically in ruins, has a half torn wall in the middle of the building, and the dining room’s roof is cracked and torn due to careless maintenance. The daycare center isn’t only poorly maintained but it is also poorly built and the material used for the roof on top of the kitchen is made of a material called asbestos, which is carcinogenic. Furthermore, the community in which the center is situated in is a poor human settlement, surrounded by walls in order to be protected from the cars and people passing by on the outside, however the main gate is open at all times during the day, letting strangers like us enter without being checked. All of these facts thrown together create a big problem for the children and the community’s safety.
