After finishing the process of planning and designing our final project, we began to visit the site most Wednesdays and Saturdays to work on the series of activities we had come up with. Our goal for working on these activities was for the children to gain more self-confidence and improve the environment between them. The first activity we worked on with the kids was “Tracing a Friend”. This activity consisted on placing one of the children on a long piece of paper, used for tracing the kid’s outline. After doing this, every kid part of the ensemble had to draw a characteristic they liked from the child that had been traced. The children had a great working on this, because they had the chance of drawing and expressing their opinions. Moreover, not only were they entertained, but they also learned that everyone has different qualities and traits, making us all unique and special. Furthermore, we called the second activity “Quality Cards”. For this activity, the kids were grouped in pairs, and they colorfully decorated pieces of paper with paint and sponges. After finishing with the decoration of the cards, the children then had to write a message to their partners, including their partners’ qualities and what they like about them. We decided this was a great activity to do because of the fact that with it, the kids would feel loved by their friends, and they learned that everyone is unique and special in many ways. Also, when painting the cards, the purpose of it was for them to observe their talent in painting, being good at either abstract or non-abstract, or maybe both. After this activity, we made flour balls with the kids, using only balloons, flour and plastic bottles as funnels. This was an easy activity for the children to work on, yet they had a lot of fun getting dirty with the flour and playing between them. The procedure of this activity was to first cut the top of one of the balloons and fill it with flour, using the funnel we provided them with. We then provided them with another balloon, which was used as the covering for the hole of the other balloon. The children learned that they are capable of doing fun and creative crafts, and that one can always have a good time. On the same day we worked on the flour balls, we also worked on the activity of “paper horses”. This activity consisted on creating a paper horse with recycled materials, such as the cardboard of toilet paper rolls. The children created very pretty horses, which they then began to play with. During the last weeks of visiting the site, we decided to focus only on reflective activities. We first worked on “who we are”, activity that consisted on reflecting about one and learning more about others. Everyone had to write questions on pieces of paper that had a more detailed response than just a “yes” or “no”, and that would help one know more about the others. With this activity, the children got to know more about the rest of the children, and when sharing their answers, they felt loved, because of the fact that many don’t receive much attention. Finally, on our last visit to the site, we worked on the “self-esteem ball rebound” activity, which we only needed a beach ball for. This activity merely consisted on using a beach ball to explain one’s self-esteem and how it can change in a matter of seconds. The ball would start filled with air, and when thrown to the floor, the kids observed how it bounced back to where it had started. Moreover, one by one, each kid had to then share an idea of what could lower one’s self-esteem really quickly, which for them was to “make you feel sad”. The kids shared many of their experiences and, little by little, the beach ball lost air and could not bounce anymore. Finally, the ball was inflated again, and could bounce. The children and us then reflected on how one’s self-esteem changes throughout the day and how, all of a sudden, one can go from being happy to sad. Nevertheless, we made them know how, even though bad things can happen in life, everything will be all right, and that when being sad, one can return to being happy again. These activities have been of great help to the kids, improving their self-esteem, their communication skills, and creating a peaceful and trust – building environment between them, which were our final goals for this project. |
