COMMUNITY FOCUS

2008

Expectations

The goal is for your group to spend time in the community, spending at least 20 hours at the site (these hors should be logged), giving of your talents and efforts. Students are not expected to spend undue amounts of money. However, should fundraising be needed, your group will first need to fill out a Fundraiser Form for gaining permission. Groups will need to keep account using an Excel spreadsheet of any funds raised and spent, and all materials used. For fundraising, posters may not be taped on painted walls in school; however, posters can be taped on boards, doors and windows. Each group will be responsible for taking down their posters when their need has ended.

There must be fieldwork done outside the school. The group should have evidence of that fieldwork, such as photographs or videos. Because much of your work will take place in the community, make sure that at least one group member is fluent in Spanish. None of the Media Center equipment is available for out of school checkout so if you need any equipment (film/videotapes, cameras, projectors, etc.) to complete your fieldwork you must provide it yourself.

Group cooperation is important and expected. Be ready to be organized and on task, to resolve any differences effectively. Be good listeners and ready to pull your own weight with all the tasks including decision making. It is important that groups plan out each CAS period, assigning tasks for each group member. You will be rewarded with points for good cooperation, shared responsibility and efficient use of CAS time.

Students should come prepared to CAS with this booklet and the materials that they will use for that day. They should always leave materials in their faculty supervisor's classroom so that other group members can work on their project even if one of the group is absent. An absent group member does not constitute a good reason for the group not to do work during CAS. Deadlines are very close together so that school time can be maximized. Therefore, it is essential that groups use school time effectively and not waste it socializing.

Students are expected to ask questions of their faculty supervisors and other eighth grade teachers. We will help to the best of our ability. Students should also maximize the use of their adult mentors.

Students are expected to observe all rules regarding plagiarism . All sources should be cited in MLA format.

Application of Design Cycle

Throughout your CoFo experience, your supervisor will provide you with information that will guide you through the process. To display that you clearly understand this process while developing your problem solving skills, you will document ALL the work you do in your design folder. This documentation will include logging phone calls, interviews, costs, drafts, notes of discussion – ALL of your hard work! You will also be expected to write weekly journal entries identifying your thoughts, experiences, challenges, and successes in this project.
