IMPERIAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

5 th Grade

All About me
Hi, my name is Ryan Gwaltney. I was born on February 2, 1994 (Groundhog Day in the USA) in Fountain Valley, California, USA. I am 10 years old and I am in the fifth grade at Imperial Elementary School. I have three other people in my family: my sister Briana, and my parents, Doug and Christy. I also have five pets. I have a Leopard Gecko, three Hermit Crabs and a dog. Do you have any pets? I wish I had another dog or two. When I grow up I want to raise animals or own a pet store. If no one will buy the animals, I will keep them myself and take care of them.
Now that you know the basic facts about me, I will tell you about the favorite things in my life. First of all, my favorite food is spaghetti. I like it with plain red sauce, usually without the meatballs.
Many people say that I shouldn’t like this color because it’s plain, but my favorite color is white. The main reason I like the color white is because it will go with everything.
I also like playing many sports, like basketball, baseball and soccer. Out of those three sports my favorite is soccer. I usually play goalie on my team, which is called Blue Crush, and I sometimes play forward. I have fifteen players on my team, and so far we have won three of our games this season. My team has been together for a couple of years and one year we won the District Championship.
My favorite TV show is Spongebob Squarepants. I love it because it makes me laugh. I also love to read in my spare time. My favorite series of books is called, The Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. They are exciting and mysterious stories that are hard to put down. I am now reading the fourth out of ten books. It is called, “The Miserable Mill.” Have you ever read any of The Series of Unfortunate Events books? I have a ton of favorite things but I have to leave room for my other paragraphs.
Me

Here are some other things you should know about me. The only language that I speak is English, but I would like to learn Italian some day. I think that it would be cool to speak Italian. That way I could order my favorite food, spaghetti, in Italian, (which in Italian is still spaghetti but I just think it would be cool.) Some other sports that I like to play are tennis, swimming, table tennis (ping-pong), track (running) and being a “couch potato” when I’m done playing all of these sports.
Now, I will describe my house. My house is a two story house, close to the top of a hill. We have a big backyard with a pool, a bar-b-que, a fire pit, and a basketball hoop. In California, it is usually warm and sunny, so we swim in the pool a lot. Have you ever seen a dog swim? My dog swims with me all of the time. My room is sadly the smallest bedroom in the house. My parents put me in that room when I was little so I could be close to their bedroom in case something happened to me or I just started crying so they could get to me a lot quicker. When I get to seventh grade, I am going to move to the guest room, which is a lot bigger. We also have a large playroom, called the “Toy Room,” where I am typing this letter right now.
I hope my life sounds interesting and I can’t wait to read about yours! Maybe someday you will be able to visit my country, and maybe even my city and state.
All About my family
I have a family of nine (including my pets). First of all I have a dad named Doug, a mom named Christy, and a sister named Briana. My dad is 42 years old, my mom is also 42 years old, my sister is 13 years old, and I am 10. I also have five pets. I have a Labrador Retriever named Kira who is a big, fat 97 lb. lug, but we love her a lot. I also have a Leopard Gecko named Pokie and three Hermit Crabs that really don’t have names, but we call the biggest one “Pasta Crab” because his shell reminds us of pasta. We call the medium crab “Medium Crab” because we couldn’t think of a name. We call the smallest crab “Orange Crab” simply because his shell is orange. Those are all of the members of my family.
Some of our family activities include sports, taking walks around the block, going camping and going boating at the Colorado River. The sports my sister and I play are soccer, baseball/softball and basketball. My dad helps coach our teams and my mom is the team mom for my soccer team. They never miss a game if they can help it. We take walks around our neighborhood when we have time. I enjoy taking walks because I like the exercise and spending time with my family and my dog. We go camping a couple of times a year to the lake or the mountains. My favorite place to go camping is Lake Shasta, which is in Northern California near my grandparents’ house. My favorite family activity is going boating at the Colorado River, which is on the border of Arizona and Nevada. It is my favorite because I can spend time with my family and friends on the water and in the hotel.
Here are some of the other things that you should know about my family. We only speak English at home, but I would like to learn another language like Italian. All four of my grandparents are alive and living in California. I also have five aunts, five uncles and thirteen cousins, all in California. In fact, I spent the night at my cousin’s house last night! We live in a two-story house with a big yard and a pool. We have a big playroom where I spend most of my playtime at home. My room is decorated with sports things and Pokie, my leopard gecko lives in my room too. The crabs live in my sister’s room. It’s cool because it is decorated with beach stuff. It even has a surfboard in the corner! You might be wondering which room my dog Kira lives in...well, whatever room she wants! I would like to say more about my family, but my fingers are starting to get tired. And so am I! Good bye for now!

School and Community
I go to a school called Imperial Elementary. I’ve been at Imperial for six years, from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade! Right now I am in Ms. Ruiz’ class with twenty-six other students. Next year, in sixth grade, it will be my last year at Imperial Elementary. Well, that’s enough about me. Now I’m going to tell you other things about Imperial Elementary. Imperial Elementary is a pretty small school for our area. There are 18 classrooms and around 380 students. Most schools in my town have twice as many students, or more.
A day at Imperial goes like this: We get to school at around 8:00 a.m. At 8:15, the teachers take all of the students into their classrooms. We work in class until 10:05, then we have our first recess for 15 minutes. Since first recess is only 15 minutes long, I don’t have much time to play, but I still have fun. At 10:20, we go back to class for about 1 _ hours until lunchtime at 12:00. Lunch is served on the blacktop in the middle of the playground since we don’t have a cafeteria. We eat at the lunch table with our class. We get 15 minutes to eat and 30 minutes to play. I have to eat fast so I can have as much time to play as possible. After lunch, we go back to class until 2:35 p.m., except for Wednesdays. On that day, we get out at 1:20 pm. That’s why Wednesday is my favorite school day!
Imperial Elementary is a large single rectangular building on the top of a hill. The classrooms are all linked together with no doors on the inside so I can sneak out of class (just kidding!). There is a large library in the middle of the school. The upper grades are on the right and the lower grades on the left. We also have a computer lab and a music room next to the library. The playground is very large too! There is a large paved area with basketball hoops, handball courts and lunch tables. There are two humongous sand boxes with swings, slides and monkey bars to play on. The biggest part of the playground is the grass field area where we play soccer, football and other sports.
As you can tell, I really like going to Imperial Elementary School. I’ve had six different teachers, and they have all been great. Since it is such a small school, everyone knows each other and I have made many friends. Imperial is a great school, and I hope you can visit sometime!

I live in Anaheim Hills, California, U.S.A. My city is a part of Orange County. California is a large state. We live in the southern part of California. Southern California is known for great weather! It is sunny and 75 degrees or above almost every day.
Many tourists visit my community. We have lots of amusement parks like Disneyland, California Adventure, Knott’s Berry Farm and Magic Mountain. I have been to all of them! I love to ride roller coasters, do you? Another great part about my community is that we are close to the beach and the mountains. We had fun at the beach this summer and even had dolphins swim right next to us! We like to go camping in the mountains too. Lots of people ski but I haven’t tried that yet. Anaheim is also home to a great baseball team, the Angels! They won the World Series of baseball a couple of years ago and won their division, so far, this year! I have been to many of their games. They have exciting games and come from behind a lot to win!
My city has some businesses but it is mainly houses. It has good neighborhoods and I like living here. My neighborhood has hills, after all, it is Anaheim Hills. The only problem is I can’t play basketball out front, unless I want to chase my ball all the way down the hill.
My community also has lots of sports for kids. There are parks where kids play soccer, baseball, football, and basketball. There is tennis and ice hockey too! Luckily, the park where I play baseball and soccer is close to my house. The high school where basketball is played is less than a mile away too! I play Little League baseball, Signature soccer (competitive league), and NJB basketball. My sister also plays those sports and plays on a travel team for softball.
I love to live here and I bet if you lived here, you would love it as much as I do. Well, I’m off to play!
