Scientific Name: Pharomachrus mocinno

Spanish Name: Quetzal

Size: Its body measures about 14 inches in length and its tail alone is 3 feet in length. 35 inches from the tip of the bill to the tail.

Life span: Unknown, none have survived in captivity (can't survive in captivity).

Diet: mainly eats fruits, their favorite is the avocado and the blackberries, also eats lizards, insects, and frogs
 

Predators:  The Quetzals predators are humans, squirrels, emerald toucanets, rown jays, weasels, tayras (predators usually eat the young).
 

Adaptations: 

  • Jadelike feathers help them fly faster and for longer time than other birds.
  • camouflage from its predators with it greenish feathers.
  • Its small beak is perfect for the fruit it eats.
  •  The Quetzal hides in trees from their enemies.
  • When habitat is destroyed, it will habit in old empty woodpecker holes.

  • Quetzal means "precious" or "beautiful".
  • Quetzal's has been around since the Maya and they played a big roole in their lifes.             
  • Quetzal were sacred. 
  • Quetzal valued more than gold.
