American Diploma Requirements

Beginning with 9th grade, a student receives 1/2 credit per semester for each course passed. The minimum passing grade is a "D". Courses which have been passed usually may not be repeated to obtain a higher grade. In certain cases, however, the principal and teacher may give authority to do so. A student who receives an "F" or does not meet attendance requirements receives no credit in that subject for the semester. To earn the US Diploma, students must accumulate 24 credits by successful completion of courses in the subject areas listed below:

ENGLISH

If an English course is failed, credit must be earned, either by repeating the appropriate course or through an alternative option arranged through the counseling office and approved by the administration in advance.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The same policy regarding failure for English is applied. With prior approval from the administration, an elective social studies course such as Psychology or Economics may be used for make-up credit, except for US History and Global Issues which are required for graduation. Transfer students may substitute other Social Studies courses as appropriate.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Two credits of Spanish are required in grades 9 and 10 regardless of the particular level of proficiency. It is also highly recommended that students take Spanish every year at Roosevelt. Exceptions to the requirement may be made by the administration for ESL students.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students must take Physical Education and Health in grades 9 -10.

ARTS

One credit of Arts will be required of all students preferably in 9th grade.

PGC

All freshmen will take part in Peer Group Connections classes once per week. PGC is an elective class for seniors.
