Mission Statement:
Physical and Health Education courses expose students to challenges designed to promote an enjoyment of active and healthy lifestyles.

Course Components

The course emphasizes three development areas:

1. Participation:
This focuses on the student's drive, enthusiasm, and initiative for the activity/Health topic. Special consideration is given for:

  • Punctuality   5 marks are deducted for each tardy

  • Proper uniform* 5 marks are deducted for each infraction

  • Willingness to volunteer to demonstrate and/or get involved in activities

  • Peer teaching

  • Daily participation**

*Uniform policy: “Students are required to wear the Roosevelt P.E. uniform, gym socks and appropriate footwear for all activity units.” School sweat wear is appropriate.

**Excuses: Parents need to send an excuse with the student for illness. Medical excuses issued by a doctor are necessary if a student is to miss 3 or more days. Students who are legitimately ill should request permission to go home prior to coming to PHE class. A student who is absent 4 or more days from a particular unit will receive an "incomplete" for that unit, and that unit will not figure into the average grade. Unexcused Absences will result in a loss of 5 marks per day. It is the student's responsibility to show an excused pass to the teacher.

Participation is the key focus for PHE at Roosevelt.

2. Skill Development:
Skill development is emphasized at Roosevelt. The initial state of
your physical skills is irrelevant. Instead, we focus on how much
you develop over the course of instruction. This aspect is tied to
participation. Even a great athlete will not do well in this course
unless she/he has the "great" attitude to match.

3. Cognitive Development:
Each student's ability to master content in both PHE and Health
areas will be measured through written tests, essays, personal
and group projects, and oral presentations.
