IB MATH METHODS 12
CURRICULUM


This course is designed to prepare students for the IB Math Methods exam.  Topics studied will include: probability, statistics, differential calculus, integral calculus and a review for the exam. The prerequisites for this course are PreCalculus and IB diploma candidate.

Functions and Calculus

Functions
    The student will understand and be able to use:
        Functions of a single real variable
        Composites and inverses
        Domain and range of a function
    The student will:
        Graph functions and their inverses with the use of a graphing calculator.
        Graph functions and their inverese without the use of a graphing calculator.
        State the domain and range of a function and its inverse.

Differentiation
    The student will understand and be able to find derivatives of:
        Sums, products and quotients
        Trigonometric functions
        Exponential functions
    The student will find derivatives of functions using:
        Definition of derivative
        Power rule
        Product rule
        Quotient rule
        Chain rules

Applications of Differentiation
    The student will understand and be able to use:
        Graphs and properties of functions and their derivatives
        Equations of the tangent and normal at a point
        Stationary values
        Maxima and minima
        Curve sketching
        Approximation of the roots
        Linear interpolation
        Newton-Raphson process
    The student will:
        Use derivatives to find stationary points
        Use derivatives to find equations of tangents to a curve.
        Use derivatives to find equations of normals to a curve.
        Use approximation techniques including Newton-Raphson.

Integration
    The student will:
        Find the area under a curve.
        Find the area between 2 curves.
        Evaluate integrals using various integration methods.
        Find the volume of a rotation.

Applications of Integration
    The student will understand and be able to use:
        Definite integrals and their use in finding areas
        Trapezium rule
    The student will:
        Use the trapezium rule to approximate area under a curve.
        Find the area with respect to the y-axis.
 

Statistics
    The student will understand and be able to use:
        Frequency diagrams
        Histograms
        Mean
        Standard deviation
        Variance
        Cumulative frequency curves
        Median and interquartile range

Normal distribution
    The student will understand and be able to use:
        Standard normal variable
    The student will:
        Apply statistical formulas to calculate the mean, variance, and standard deviation.
        Construct frequency diagrams to illustrate probabilities.
        Construct histograms to illustrate probabilities.
        Interpret frequency diagrams and histograms to solve problems.
        Apply the Normal distribution to real world situations to solve statistical problems.

Review for the IB Exam to be given in May.
