The mathematics department at Colegio Roosevelt has the following
main goals for students: becoming mathematical problem solvers,
communicating mathematically, reasoning mathematically, and making
mathematical connections.
Students will apply mathematical concepts and skills and the
relationship among them to solve problem situations of varying
complexities. Students will also recognize and create problems
from real-life data and situations within and outside mathematics
and then apply appropriate strategies to find an acceptable solution.
A major goal of the mathematics program is to help students become
competent problem solvers.
Students will use the language of mathematics, including specialized
vocabulary and symbols, to represent and describe mathematical
ideas, generalizations, and relationships. Representing, discussing,
reading, writing, and listening to mathematics will help students
to clarify their thinking and deepen their understanding of the
mathematics being studied.
Students will learn and apply inductive and deductive reasoning
skills to make, test, and evaluate mathematical statements and
to justify steps in mathematical procedures. Students will use
logical reasoning to analyze an argument and to determine whether
conclusions are valid.
Students will relate concepts and procedures from different topics
in mathematics to one another, using a variety of representations
such as graphical, numerical, algebraic, verbal and physical.
Students will make connections between different areas of mathematics
and between mathematics and other disciplines.
INTEGRATED ALGEBRA I
one year
Prerequisite: None
This course is the basis needed for math throughout High School
and into higher education. It introduces problem solving using
various types of equations and graphing as well as integrating
other mathematical concepts.
TOP
INTEGRATED GEOMETRY
one year
Prerequisite: Integrated Algebra I
This course introduces important concepts of angles, triangles,
and other polygons. Students will learn how to use geometry in
conjunction with algebra in problem solving. This course continues
to reinforce and build upon existing algebra concepts.
TOP
INTEGRATED ALGEBRA II
one year
Prerequisite: Integrated Geometry
This course builds on knowledge and skills from Integrated Algebra
I and Integrated Geometry. It introduces new topics such as functions,
quadratics, more complex equations, and matrices.
TOP
INTEGRATED ALGEBRA II/TRIGONOMETRY
one year
Prerequisite: B average minimum in Integrated Geometry
This is a fast-paced, advanced course for students who have met
the prerequisites and are intending to go on to IB Math or AP
Calculus. This course builds on knowledge and skills from Integrated
Algebra I and Integrated Geometry. It introduces new topics such
as functions, quadratics, more complex equations, polynomial functions,
sequences and series, exponential and logarithmic functions. A
major part of this course is the study of trigonometry.
TOP
TRIGONOMETRY/STATISTICS
one year
Prerequisite: Algebra II or Algebra II/Trig
This course is designed for students who have taken Integrated
Algebra II or Integrated Algebra II/Trig. The first semester of
the course provides a thorough study of trigonometric functions,
equations, graphs, and applications. The second semester is designed
to introduce students to important concepts of statistics and
probability. Students will take full advantage of technology to
collect, analyze, and display their own data. Projects are an
integral part of this course. Many careers require a strong background
in statistics.

PRE-CALCULUS
one year
Prerequisite: B average minimum in Algebra II/Trig
This course is an introduction to calculus. Topics studied in
depth are polynomial functions, graphing, vectors, trigonometry,
and matrices.
TOP
MATH
REASONING one semester
Prerequisite: Integrated Algebra II or Integrated Algebra
II/Trig
This course, taught in Spanish, is designed to prepare students
for the type of mathematical problems they may expect to encounter
on an admissions exam for Peruvian Universities. This class is
highly recommended for students planning to attend university
in Peru.
