What is High School IB?

The IB program is a comprehensive and rigorous two-year curriculum designed for highly-motivated students, which is recognized as being the most complete and challenging examination system in the world.

The IB program has a few general objectives:

  1. The first of these objectives is to provide students with a balanced education that educates the individual in essential skills for life.
  2. The second of these objectives is to promote international understanding through shared academic experiences that develop responsible citizenship.
  3. Thirdly the IB program is built to educate a person through an international and interdisciplinary approach.
  4. The IB program also wishes to create critical and compassionate thinkers and lifelong learners.

The INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE program courses take place during a student's Junior and Senior years. A student can register for the full IB Diploma or for individual course certificates. The full IB Diploma consists of six subject examinations based on the IB requirements determining the areas of the study. Along with the examinations there are other components (Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, CAS Activities) that can add points towards the total needed to gain a diploma (24 points minimum). The examinations are given in May and are scored externally. Each subject usually has two written exams (papers) with the times varying depending on the subject and whether it is at a Higher or Standard Level. Languages have oral exams and all subjects have a teacher assessed or internally moderated component.
All students are expected to take the IB Exam for the course they are taking. Students must be registered at Roosevelt and attending school in order to take the IB exam.

University credit can be awarded particularly for grades of 5 or above on the higher level exams. Credit is rarely given for a certificate in a standard subject, but a full diploma can be used to gain advanced standing in U.S. universities.
