Requirements:

Certificate Candidates

Those students who prefer, or whom the school advises, to follow a Certificate program, are encouraged to choose Higher level subjects and Standard level subjects from the groups provided. Certificate students are:

  • Encouraged but not required to take subjects at Higher level
  • Not required to offer a language A1, i.e. both languages may be studied at B or A2 level
  • Not required to submit an Extended Essay
  • Not required to take the TOK course


    The Diploma Program:

    Diploma students choose their program of six subjects for the full Diploma to be studied over two years, from the following;

    To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, candidates are required to offer one subject from each of the 6 groups. Three must be taken at higher level and the other three at standard level. It is unwise to choose four higher level subjects.

    • The Diploma candidate must also meet three additional requirements:
    • Submission of a 4,000 word Extended Essay
    • Satisfactory completion of the course entitled Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
    • Mandatory participation in the extracurricular CAS program

The lists below are intended to give an indication of university courses in the U.S.A., Canada, Australia and U.K. They are not complete, but do give the major subject disciplines. Also, there are subject combinations in various forms and groupings.

The subject requirement is only intended to give an indication of likely minimum requirements. The requirements in some subjects and universities are more rigid than others and these may be more specific in Britain than in the U.S.A. The IB gives students a great deal of flexibility in choosing courses in the US or the UK.
