What is the Extended Essay?

The extended essay is an in-depth study of a limited topic.

The Extended Essay should be sufficiently focused to allow candidates to examine an issue or problem in enough detail to apply research methodologies.

The extended essay provides an opportunity for IB Diploma candidates to engage in independent research. The topic must clearly be related to an IB subject taught at FDR.

The extended essay does not form part of the normal class time and candidates are expected to take the initiative in their free time.

Emphasis is placed on the analysis and evaluation of collected data or information generated rather than being a superficial description of something observed without further investigation.

Candidates are expected to meet internal school deadlines for the extended essay in order to maintain their IB Diploma status.
