ROOSEVELT READS! FAMILY FUN NIGHT
Over 100 students, parents and staff gathered in the library Wednesday afternoon for an ending celebration to the first semester's RR! activities. Two graffiti walls were covered, over 30 titles were acted out as charades, snacks and coffee were devoured, books were read aloud, and over 25 books were given out as raffle prizes (including 2 signed copies of the Diamond of Darkhold). The celebration reached its peak when four teams competed in a Knowledge Bowl about the City of Ember. Members of the winning team, Cristóbal de Losada, Carlos Chediek, Amada de Losada & Robb Hoiseth, each got 2 free passes to the new City of Ember movie, opening soon in Lima. The night ended with a final raffle drawing for two S/. 50 gift certificates to a local book store. Look for the launch of One Author - One Community next semester, and more ROOSEVELT READS! activities when we come back from vacation.

VISITING LOCAL AUTHOR
We are pleased to announce that on Friday, Dec. 5, Jorge Eslava, a Peruvian writer of over 20 books for children, will be visiting FDR to present to Grades 1 through 6. Mr. Eslava is the author of “El Capitán Centella” series and “Florentino Supercochino” among others.
Mr. Eslava will be at school to read from his books and take questions from students as part of our ongoing celebration of Roosevelt Reads! Students have a chance to buy copies of the author's books before his visit, at a special price, and Mr. Eslava will autograph them and deliver them on the day of his visit. Please stop by the library to preview Jorge's books!
READING ASSESSMENT FOR ELEMENTARY PARENTS
The third of five Parent Workshops will be held in the Elementary Library on Tuesday, November 18, from 2:15 to 3:15. As part of Roosevelt Reads! and its purpose of uniting us as a community of readers, Ms. Hendershott and Ms. Choan will share the ways Elementary teachers assess readers. Knowing what a child can do comes before helping them along to the next step. To that end, teachers use a variety of tools, in class, formally and informally, to see where children are with reading print, picking books, comprehending, and making meaning. If you've always wondered what reading continuums, anecdotal notes, or running records are, this is the workshop for you.
