Overseas Faculty Manual - ARRIVAL AT THE LIMA AIRPORT

Once you have been hired, you will be contacted by the school to initiate plans for you (and your family, if appropriate) When you arrive you will enter with a Tourist Visa. Please be sure that at immigration in the airport they stamp your passport for at least 90 days. A schedule will be created for you to visit the school and meet your team/department, meet with the teacher you will be replacing, and observe some classes. You will have a good chance to go over the curriculum you will be responsible for teaching.

Also during this June visit, you will be driven by the Housing/Relocation Assistant and/or a real estate agent to visit the house or apartment that have been selected for you based on your needs listed in your “housing survey.” You will finalize your housing decision during this June visit. Also, if there are items you wish to be repaired or paint selections you wish to request, these will need to be finalized during this visit. If you would like a fix phone, TV cable , you will have the opportunity to sign the forms to start the process to try to have it ready for your arrival in July. Internet will be install once you arrive and have your computers in Lima.

You will also meet with the Human Resources Manager for you to sign your Peruvian Working contract and fill out an application for local bank account and debit/credit cards. You will need to go to the Interpol Office here in Lima as a process needed in order to obtain your Resident Visa.

When you arrive at the International Airport Jorge Chavez in Lima, you will be asked for your Passport, and your Embarkation/Disembarkation Card (which you must fill out on the airplane). Once they have stamped your passport and you have ensured that they have returned all your documents, proceed to the large baggage claim area. Before collecting your bags, decide if you are going to declare any items. If you are going to declare, go directly to the Customs Declaration window and present your Customs Declaration Form with the description of the declared items. They will process and determine the price of the items you are declaring, and then you will go to the Bank teller window and pay the duty (hand your paperwork directly to the teller). The duty charged is 20% on all your declared items, based on a list of prices from Peruvian Customs. Check the paperwork before paying, and verify that the prices on the articles you have declared seem reasonable. If they do not, ask the first agent you spoke to for help.

Then collect your luggage. While you and your family are collecting your luggage at the carrousel, note that there may be an agent who will collect your luggage ID tags. Move on to customs. There you will be asked for your passports and the customs declaration form, plus the receipt of duties paid, if any. Once the agent verifies that documents are complete, you will be asked to press a button that randomly activates either a red light or a green light. If the green turns on, you are free to leave customs. Unfortunately, if the red light turns on, you will need to pass to another customs agent who will go through each piece of luggage. Every piece must be opened. Do not complain as this will just delay the process.

Once you are finished with the red/ green light area, proceed to the area just outside the doors of the building where we will be waiting for you with a school vehicle for transporting you and your family to your new residence (or temporary accommodation).

It may take anywhere from 1 to 2 and a half hours to clear customs. Do not worry! We will wait for you!
