Flexible Scheduling in the Library and Tech Lab

The Elementary Technology Lab and Library Media Center teachers continue to be excited by the overwhelming success of flexible scheduling.

What does this mean for students? Students do not have a set time to visit the library/media center or tech labs every week. They continue to use the tech labs and library in the course of their regular class work. However, in addition to working with their classroom teacher, Ms. Ximena Núñez del Prado, Ms. Carla Puppo and Ms. Karen Choan guide them in developing research and other information literacy and technology skills.

Students also visit the library individually whenever they want to check out a new book or spend some quiet time reading or researching and come to the technology labs when they need to work on different assignments.

There have been many benefits since implementing this flexible schedule at FDR. By allowing students to use the library media center and tech labs at point of need, students have been able to make strong connections with what they are learning. Research indicates, and our data concur, that students will spend more hours per year in the library media center and tech labs under a flexibly scheduled program. Finally, flexible scheduling has required that our teachers plan together, collaborativelly, therefore creating a stronger team and PYP curriculum at FDR.
