Elementary School Parent Bulletin – September 28, 2009IMPORTANT DATES
CONFERENCE WEEK IS HERE Parents, we’re looking forward to seeing you at the conferences. Please be prompt! As a reminder, for our EC and Kinder parents, these will be Parent-Teacher Conferences where parents will be invited in to talk about their child’s progress with the teacher. Next semester, conferences will be Three-Way, with students present and actively participating. In first through fifth grades, the conferences both semesters will be Student-Led. In Student-Led Conferences, parents are invited to the classroom to participate in a conference that is truly Student-Led. Each student will share pieces of work from his/her portfolio, set goals, and discuss his/her reflections regarding the start of the year. It’s a very empowering experience for students to share with their parents in this setting, and parents find it informative and enlightening to see their child being responsible for his/her own learning. What is a Student-Led Conference?
What is the role of the teacher? The teacher will sit with each family for a few minutes providing feedback on how each student is progressing. If you would like your child to step aside while you talk with the teacher, he/she will be asked to read a book in the reading corner. What is expected from parents?
Your child will share with you some honest reflections. Even if you are concerned with your child’ behavior, praise him /her for being reflective and ask how you can be more supportive. What is expected from students?
ELEMENTARY READ-IN Our Elementary School took part in a campus-wide Read-in last week. As part of the continuing celebration of reading, kids from age 3 to 11 came to the ES gym, wore reading hats and curled up with a good book to read silently for 15 minutes before going home. Look for more reading events this semester: Family Fun Night from 4 to 6 on November 18th and the One Book One Community book, Danny the Champion of the World, in the library. A few “Joey Pigza” books by our recent visiting author, Jack Gantos, are still available in the library.
IOWA TESTS OF BASIC SKILLS All students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will be taking the IOWA TESTS OF BASIC SKILLS (ITBS) – Form A during the week of Parent/Teacher Conferences Sept. 28 – Oct. 2. These tests measure academic achievement and help us assess our school’s programs as well as obtain more information about our students in order to meet their individual needs. The completed tests will be sent to the U.S.A. for scoring. Test results will be made available to you when they arrive next semester. If a child is absent one or more days, he or she will not be making up for the tests, therefore the reports will be incomplete. Given the importance of these achievement tests we encourage you to make sure that your child gets an appropriate amount of sleep and eats a good breakfast. We hope children come to school well rested, confident, and ready to do a good job. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Principal or Counselor. THIRD GRADE PLAY DAY The purpose of this culminating activity was a celebration of our first Unit of Inquiry, Healthy Choices. The students participated in a variety of physical activities and rated each activity based on heart rate, enjoyment and body movement. They were able to apply their knowledge and had a fantastic time in the process! Enjoy the pictures!
