THIRD GRADE STUDENTS VISITED PIZZA HUT!

Students in third grade are learning about economics in their PYP unit, Market Place. Each student has made a business plan and will market goods and services at Market Place Day, June 19, from 9:30 to 11:00am. Last week all third grade classes visited Pizza Hut to learn about franchises, quality control and what makes a successful business! They learned what makes a great ad campaign and will come up with their own logos and slogans.

ART LESSONS FOR FIRST GRADERS:

First graders in Ms. Natalia de Pierola's class enjoyed Ms. Pati Camet's (Plastic Artist) art lessons last week. Students learned how to use clay to model their endangered animals for the "We Care" PYP unit and had a blast!

THIRD GRADE ANNUAL MARKET PLACE:  Thursday, June 19;  9:30 - 11:00 a.m. - Elementary School Alameda

Over the past month third grade students have been baking, cutting, gluing, threading and creating original craft to sell at our annual market as a part of our economics unit.

Earnings from Market Place will be donated to the 3rd grade community service project, Nido Matazango. In past years Nido Los Geranios in Comas has used this money for additional classrooms and a security wall.

Come snack on brownies, sushi, and other delicious baked goods. Shop for jewelry, paperweights, bookmarks, and other handmade crafts.

ELEMENTARY MUSICAL:

Colegio Roosevelt's Elementary Chorus is happy to present this year's musical production: "The Wizard of Oz"!  Students and teachers will attend Dress Rehearsals on Thursday and Friday during school hours. The Wizard of Oz will be performed for the whole Roosevelt Community
on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 7 p.m. in Center Stage.

FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS VISITED MAMACONA:  Spanish program

On Tuesday, June 3 the Fifth Grade students visited Mamacona, where they could enjoy an exhibition of the Peruvian Paso Horse as a complement to one of the Peruvian traditions we should encourage among our students. They had the opportunity to have direct contact with the amazons, the “chalanes” and the excellent explanation and guidance of Mrs. Bentin and Mr. Risso, President of the Association of Owners and Breeders of the Peruvian Paso Horse.

LIBRARY NEWS:

Storyteller Megan Hicks from the USA performed for 1st through 5th graders on Friday. She taught students how to tell stories with Origami.

All library materials are due on Tuesday, June 10 so we can complete our year-end inventory. At the end of the school year, we will withhold report cards of students who have missing library items. Book checkout for the winter holiday begins on Monday, June 23.

One Book - One Community
As part of our overarching school theme for next year—Roosevelt Reads!--we are encouraging every member of our school community  (students, staff, and teachers) to all read the same book: "The City of Ember" by Jeanne DuPrau. We will have a limited number of copies available for checkout in the library, but you might consider buying a copy for your family to read together. The book is available in English and Spanish through Amazon.com and other book sellers in the US; maybe you want to pick one up on your vacation travels. Many fourth and fifth grade students will be able to read the novel on their own, but it would also make an excellent read-aloud. What if your whole family read the same book? What if all of FDR read the same book?
