COUNSELOR’S CORNER: The Effects of TV in Children.

Research has demonstrated that the first 2 years of life is a critical time for brain development. This is the perfect time to stimulate children’s brain through reading, talking and playing with specific toys. Many infants and children are exposed to TV since they are very young and they spend excessive time in front of it. Some studies of children have linked TV with obesity and lower academic achievement levels. Researchers have also discovered that early television exposure is associated with attention problems at age 7 (Attention Deficit Disorder - ADD).

TV is not bad and it can provide opportunities to explore and learn, but children below 2 yrs old should not be exposed to TV. Also, parents should supervise and control the amount of TV older kids watch, as well as the content of the programs. If your child wants to watch TV suggest that you and your child play a board game, start a game of hide and seek, play outside, read, work on crafts or hobbies, or listen and dance to music.

KINDERGARTEN CELEBRATIONS:

Mother’s Day was celebrated in many ways on our campus as our children expressed their love for all those who care for them.  These are pictures of kindergarteners who performed as dancers, musicians, magicians, and poets, among many other talents.

AMAZONIC ANIMALS PRESENTATION :

Last Tuesday, Ms. Rockenmayer´s Third Grade SSL class gave a presentation on Peruvian Amazonic animals for both their parents and teachers.

First, the children read the story titled "The Great Kapok Tree" and watched a movie about Amazon animals.

Later, they brainstormed what animal they would be interested in researching about. They looked up information from safe sites found in Ms. Rockenmayer´s webpage, integrating technology to their presentations by creating them in Power Point.
