Elementary School Parent Bulletin – April 7, 2008IMPORTANT DATES:
LIBRARY NEWS: We've collected hundreds of books for the Book Swap already, but we're still looking for more! Bring any used books in good condition that you no longer want to the library any time. For every three books you donate, you will receive one ticket that you can exchange for book on the days of the swap--April 22 and 23. Books can also be purchased for 2 soles. This is a great way to encourage reading and to reuse books. Profits will be used to support developing libraries in Peru and reading promotion programs at Roosevelt. The library is looking for parent volunteers to help with the Book Swap. Please contact Linda Hoiseth (lhoiseth@amersol.edu.pe) if you're interested. The library still has a few copies of autographed books by Kimberly Willis Holt for sale at a reduced price. COUNSELOR’S CORNER: Boys & Girls Learn Differently. The second Monday of each month, our counselors will highlight a particular issue or topic of interest. Brain-based research says that there are developmental, structural, chemical, and functional differences in male and female brains. However, the differences between girls and boys do not evidence any superiority or inferiority. Michael Gurian states that boys use the right hemisphere of the brain more and the girls the left. Ruben Gur says that the resting female brain is as active as the activated male brain. Memory and sensory intake are two areas of greater functioning in female brains, while spatial tasks and abstract reasoning are two areas of greater functioning in male brains. Females are able to hear better than males; males see better than females in bright light. Understanding gender differences leads to know more about how teachers and parents can help boys and girls be more successful in class.
