Elementary School Parent Bulletin – October 6, 2008IMPORTANT DATES:
CONFERENCE WEEK IS HERE: Parents, we’re looking forward to seeing you at the conferences. Please be prompt! As a reminder, for our EC and Kinder parents, these will be Parent-Teacher Conferences where parents will be invited in to talk about their child’s progress with the teacher. Next semester, conferences will be Three-Way, with students present and actively participating. In first through fifth grades, the conferences both semesters will be Student-Led. In Student-Led Conferences, parents are invited to the classroom to participate in a conference that is truly Student-Led. Each student will share pieces of work from his/her portfolio, set goals, and discuss his/her reflections regarding the start of the year. It’s a very empowering experience for students to share with their parents in this setting, and parents find it informative and enlightening to see their child being responsible for his/her own learning. AQUATICS NEWS : The Elementary Aquatic 3 Week Unit will start on October 27 until November 14 for Mr. Drew’s classes. For Mr. Lasses's classes the Aquatic Unit will be from November 17 until December 12. Students must wear the swimming cap and the swimming suit that can be bought at the uniform shop at our school, or they can wear the team or academy swimsuit that can be bought at Iscar (phone number: 2246589). Goggles are optional but we do recommend using them. For any further information please contact Mrs. Lucha Villar (lvillar@amersol.edu.pe). BUILDING AWARENESS (October 13 – 24): Ten percent of the world’s population suffers some form of physical disability. Half the solution to the problem is awareness, and educators can easily promote this in a fun way. The Elementary PE Department organizes a wheelchair fundraiser for children with needs, to commemorate the National Handicap Awareness Day. Disabled workers make each chair at a wheelchair factory. The children have a goal of one chair per class. Last year we were able to raise enough funds to buy 42 wheelchairs for needy children. Each class will participate in different activities that allow students to experience, for a moment, the obstacles many people with disabilities face everyday. Some of the activities are the Paralympics Events. These events will be held the weeks of October 13th –October 24th. Your child will receive a yellow paper with the information and he/she should write below the amount of money each sponsor wishes to give. Then he/she will place this in an envelope and give it to his/her homeroom teacher no later than November 2nd. This envelope will then be passed on to the Elementary Office. Please be generous when a Roosevelt student approaches you to sponsor them in this worthy event. Thank you for your support. ELECTRONICS FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS: Elementary students may not use electronic devices (such as an MP4 or iPod Video) which have the capacity to show videos on our buses or campus at any time. We strive to make our campus a safe, inviting place for all our students, and information that can be made available through these devices can be inappropriate and even dangerous for our children. Just as a reminder, and as stated in our Student Parent Handbook, we discourage students from bringing electronic devices to school (such as MP3 Players, hand-held games, etc.). If these items are brought to school, they must be kept inside the student’s backpack between 7:55 a.m. and 2:20 p.m. Otherwise, the electronic device may be confiscated for the day. |
