Giovanni da Verrazano
France 1524
In
1524, Giovanni da Verrazano sailed from France to the Americas.
He was looking for a northwest
passage.
But he did not find it.
He sailed up the eastern coast of North America. He sailed on what
is now called the “Hudson River”. While he was on the
Hudson River, it looked like there was going to be a storm. So
Giovanni da Verrazano sailed back onto the ocean. At the place
where he sailed out of the river and into the ocean, there is now
a bridge. The bridge is named the ”Verrazano-Narrows Bridge”.
It is in New York City. One of the first maps ever made of the
North American coast was made from one of Giovanni’s drawings
he did during his voyage.
