Treasures of the deep: Our ocean resources .The oceans are rich in resources. They contain food and minerals. Under their floor lie vast deposits of oil. Their surface provides a vast transportation network for ships. Their tides and waves are possible sources of energy. Their waters and beaches offer recreation in the form of boating and swimming. In addition to examining the different ocean resources, this video also shows how our use of such resources threatens the sensitive ecology of the oceans. The video visits Gloucester, Massachusetts to show how overfishing has resulted in depletion of cod fish and threatens the livelihood of fishermen. It explores pollution along the Miami River, which empties into the Bay of Biscayne in Florida. It follows students as they do water quality experiments off a coral reef. Finally, the program shows ways in which we all can help protect valuable ocean resources.
