Geology:

  • California boasts of some extraordinarily diverse landscape—from glaciated peaks to vast expanses of desert

Climate:

  • Summers are hot, winters are mild and humidity is low.
  • Temperatures in the summer can get well over 90°F (32°C) and smog can become a problem.

History:

  • The state produces 350 different crops and commodities, making it the most diversified agricultural economy in the world.  
    Facts:
  • Tectonic and volcanic activity, occurring over the past 250 million years, created our coastal mountain ranges of California
  • The powerful, ceaseless waves of the Pacific also cut into the coast mountain ranges and carve vertical cliffs, terraces, and bluffs into the rock.

Geography

  • A series of low mountains known as the Coast Ranges extends along the coast.
  • The region from Point Arena, N of San Francisco, to the southern part of the state is subject to tremors and sometimes to severe earthquakes caused by tectonic stress along the San Andreas Fault.
