Robots are everywhere. In our homes, our streets, our neighborhoods, and even our wrists. Robots aren’t always what we think they are. They aren’t giant destructive machines that run wildly in Tokyo, destroying everything, nor do they have laser vision. They can’t think or have feelings of their own. They are simple machines, such as a traffic light or a digital watch. They have three qualities that make them a true robot. They have a case, which means that there’s a box or something where they can operate in. They run automatically. The third quality is that they have a behavior. The traffic light has a case, which would be the box with the different color lights, and it has a behavior (it’s what it’s called when you program a robot) in which to control traffic. The digital watch is programmed to set off an alarm. It can’t be programmed to tell time, because the watch only operates from the mechanical works inside it. A car isn’t a robot, though. It has a case, which is the frame of the car, and it also has a behavior, which would be turning on and driving, but it doesn’t run automatically, because the person can start it manually, it doesn’t turn on by itself. It has an ignition thingy to turn on, so that’s what doesn’t make it a robot. |
