PURPOSE OF THIS PAGE
This page has been created to offer students, teachers and parents a general overview of the Economics course in high school. It includes: course description, goals, content, work system, projects (project 1, project 2, project 3, project 4),  assessments, text and reference material, and students' grades.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This semester course is a general introduction to the world of economics. It provides students with a comprehensive overview of the basic concepts, principles, and practices of economics. It analyzes the structure, characteristics, and advantages and disadvantages of the capitalistic system; examines the role of government in the national economy; explains the importance of the monetary and the banking systems. In this course students learn about the causes and the effects of economic problems such as inflation, recession, and unemployment; the measures and the factors of economic growth. It covers topics such as  international trade, the economic growth in developing nations, and the ways countries try to face and overcome their major economic problems. This course is required for students in the Peruvian program but it can be taken as an elective by students in the American program.

GOALS


 


At the end of the course students should be able to:

  1. Explain the role of economics in the society and the differences that exist among the various economic systems.
  2. Explain the difference between micro and macroeconomics
  3. Explain how business are organized and combined in the free enterprise system.
  4. Contrast the market structures necessary to have perfect competition, pure monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly. 
  5. Explain the causes, characteristics, and consequences of inflation, recession, and unemployment.
  6. Contrast the structure and work of the various economic systems.
  7. Compare the economy of the developed countries with that one of the developing countries.
  8. Explain the way in which supply and demand interact in the market place.

PROJECTS
1. PERSONAL VIEW: Individual ‘Project’ Due:  March 6
     If you were asked to write an essay about the economic situation of Peru, what would you say? How do you perceive the economic reality of this country? How much do you know about it? This course will show you that ECONOMICS is a science that studies the choices people make to satisfy their wants and needs. However, the economy is a reality that affects each individual, each family, each society. Economy affects everybody.  How does economy affect the people in Peru? 
     Write a reflective short essay (no more than one and a half pages, typed) about this topic. You are going to read it to the class and answer some questions regarding your opinions. You are not expected to be an expert in economy. However, you need to demonstrate a serious approach to this matter.
 
  Evaluation criteria:  1. quality of arguments:  6 points
2. logic organization:  6 points
3. quality of information and evidence: 6 points
4. neatness: 2 points

2. SOCIOECONOMIC PROBLEMS:  Group Project Power 
     Point Presentations 
Due: March 27
After the class has identified and listed the major socioeconomic problems that affect Peru or South America, do the following:
A. Choose one, and:
  1. Describe it. Say what the problem is, why it is a problem that affects the country.
  2. Identify and describe its main causes (minimum four)
  3. Explain the consequences or effects (minimum three) of this problem.
  4. Propose at least three workable solutions
B. Prepare an oral presentation. For this presentation you are expected to use the Power Point program.
C. Each group (pair) will have 15 minutes for its presentation.
D. The evaluation will be based on the criteria described on the handout for this purpose.
E. No written paper is required, but you are supposed to present an outline and the bibliography used for this project.

3. RESEARCH PAPER : Individual Project Due: April 28
Choose one of the following topics and write a paper (using the research paper format).  In order for you  to avoid any problems, be aware of the following details: a) Your final paper should have a title, an outline, an introduction, a work body, foot or end notes, and a bibliography. b) In your introduction you should include a clear thesis statement. c) Your paper should be no shorter than three pages and no longer than four (typed).

4. WEB PAGE: Final Group Project Due: June 16

This project will substitute the traditional final exam. It is due June 16 because all groups will do a presentation to the class in order for the teacher to evaluate the general work and discuss it with the groups. All groups, however, must report to the teacher on the following dates about the progress and improvements of the page.

GRADING INFORMATION


 


This section contains the current grades of students. The grades have different value to figure out the final grade. The exams count 50%, the projects 30%, and the quizzes and homework assignments 20%. The student "X", for example,  has the following grades:

Exams:  18 + 15 + 16 =  16.3   x .5 = 8.1 
Projects:  17 + 18 + 18 =  17.6   x .3 = 5.2
Quizzes and HW: 19 + 18 + 19 =  18.6   x .2 = 3.7

The student's grade is 17 (8.1 + 5.2 + 3.7).
